DESCRIPTION: Payne Homestead at the Moses Webster House is Vinalhaven's most historic B&B. The Moses Webster House is a French Victorian home built in 1873 by granite magnate, Moses Webster. This elite house boasts the splendor of the era, yet preserves the casual comfort of island lifestyle. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1998. The Payne Homestead has been in operation as a B&B since 1995.
A scenic ferry ride from Rockland, Maine takes you to the quaint lobstering town of Vinalhaven. Located just at the edge of town, this bed and breakfast is only a 1/2 mile from the ferry terminal and convenient to the restaurants, library and Lane's Island Nature Conservancy. A short walk will bring you right to the door of this historic B&B. The island of Vinalhaven offers an array of scenic walks, hiking trails, and coves for kayaking. There are several fresh water quarries to swim in, and a few small beaches. Payne Homestead bed and breakfast is centrally located so that you can enjoy it all. |
